Hi-ResPhoto

“Go pollute yourself and the air.”

This saying referring to someone smoking cigarettes is where Chicago band Yourself & The Air take their name from, but instead of going any further with the cigarette comparisons Yourself & The Air describes THEMselves as an ever-changing musical outfit of emotion, ambition, and will.

The group started in 2006 as 5 friends who came together with barely any prior musical experience with a desire to make music and feel better. I feel that Erick Crosby (guitar, vocals), Drew Rassmussen (drums), Jeff Pappendorf (keys)m and brothers Nicholas David (Guitar) and James David (bass) have at least reached some of those expectations as they’ll be playing to what I can only assume will be a pretty large crowd this Thursday at the Metro when they open for nationwide touring band Peter Bjorn and John.

The band’s music has a sound of it’s own which has fans comparing them to the Cure, but I hear more of Phoenix’s Thomas Mars in the tones of the band’s lead singer Erick Crosby. Hear for yourself and make up your own decision when we play a song off of their newest EP Friends of All Breeds tonight live on Talk That Rocks at 9/8c only on www.talkthatrocks.com

Local Catch: Pet Lions

by Justin Kamps

FrontMan this new Local Catch segment is really “catching” on! Wink Wink….do you get it? Of course you do.

Well it’s only the 2nd week of the Local Catch segment on Talk That Rocks and we’ve already reeled in another great one. This week we’ll be spinning the song “Roman History” from the Chicago band Pet Lions.

Pet Lions are an indie pop rock band from Chicago formed by guitarist/vocalist Karl Østby and bassist Shuhei Yamamoto. Pet Lions’ lineup was completed with the addition of Tom Owens on guitar/keys and Matt Dahl on drums. The band has been playing live since July of 2008. Pet Lions debut EP Soft Right (recorded with Brian Zieske at Gallery of Carpet) was released earlier this year and can be found on iTunes and Amazon RIGHT NOW!

The song we’re playing tonight reminds me a little of Weezer but I wouldn’t say that it completely defines the band’s sound. The rest of the EP broadens them out a bit and is definitely worth checking out. The band has recently played live at Schubas, and has received rave reviews from Metromix Chicago, Indie Rock Cafe, and WXRT.

So tune in to Talk That Rocks live tonight at 9/8c as we play “Roman History” from Pet Lions, our Local Catch of the week.

6294_115997563726_10332893726_2363610_2960501_nTonight marks the start of a brand new segment on Talk That Rocks. You’ve heard of the Catch of the Day at your local restaurant, well Local Catch is a segment where the hosts of Talk That Rocks give you the local music “Catch of the Week” that is coming your way thanks to the great artists and bands being featured in venues around Chicago.

To kick things off this week’s Catch is a Chicago band by the name of Breakers Broken. The trio is made up of Chicago natives Tim Yamaya, Herf Yamaya, and Neal Wehman. Together they spent the summer in the studio recording brand new songs for their EP Reset with well-known Chicago producers Rick Barnes and Doug McBride.  New listeners will most likely liken the band’s sound to that of MuteMath, but be sure to check out one of their live shows to see the ensemble expand beyond the trio heard on the EP.
