CD Release of the Week #58

Are you ready to rock!?!?! and prehaps roll a bit?! Well if you are then you’re ready for this week’s CD Release of the Week.
This week we’re taking a listen to the debut self-titled album from Them Crooked Vultures. Them Crooked Vultures has the honor of joining the list of rock super-groups as the band is comprised of Dave Grohl (Foo Fighters), Josh Homme (Queens of the Stone Age), none other than John Paul Jones (Led Zeppelin).
I’m sure after seeing those names you are creating some high expectations in your mind for this band. Well I’m happy to say that Them Crooked Vultures delivers on those expectations. What the band has laid down on their debut album is Queens of the Stone Age infused with some classic Led Zeppelin and Dave Grohl’s signature drumming.
I’ve pretty much spent all week rockin’ out to this album and so I hope you’ll enjoy my top three picks off the debut album from Them Crooked Vultures as we feature them on tonight’s live episode of Talk That Rocks at 9/8c only on www.talkthatrocks.com
CD Release of the Week #57
Is it that time already? Has it really been a whole week? By golly!! It sure has….and you know what that means!??! It’s time for another brand new edition of the CD Release of the Week!!
This week was a little disappointing for me. None of the major label bands delivered anything good, and the indie bands I were diggin’ on were either a little too weird or a little too sleepy for the 8-10 o’clock hour. So I had to travel back in time….that’s right you heard me correctly…BACK IN TIME!!! All the way back to Oct. 27th where a release by the band The Asteroid Galaxy Tour was sadly overlooked due to Halloween festivities on Talk That Rocks.
So this week we’re featuring the album Fruit by The Asteroid Galaxy Tour. Their music is fun and upbeat and was most recently heard in a commercial for the iPod Touch. So if you’ve been wondering what the heck that one song was…we may have just found it for you. It’s music to make you hopefully forget a bit about the horrible November-on-its-way-to-winter weather outside.
So tune in tonight to Talk That Rocks live at 9/8c where we’ll play through my three favorite songs from The Asteroid Galaxy Tour’s Fruit only on www.talkthatrocks.com

CD Release of the Week #56
After a great week celebrating Halloween on Talk that Rocks we are back with a brand new CD Release of the Week!!! Aren’t you excited!?
This week we’re takin’ a listen to Julian Casablancas’ solo debut Phrazes for the Young. If you think the name Julian Casablancas sounds familiar it’s probably because it does. He’s the lead singer from the band The Strokes. Albert Hammond Jr.’s been making the rounds with his two solo albums and now it’s finally Julian Casablacas’ turn to shine as a solo artist. Phrazes for the Young is full of synth coatings on some quite danceable tracks. “11th Dimension” sits as as a standout from the rest of the tracks, but not by much.
Lucky for you’re we’ll be playing “11th Dimension” along with 2 more great tracks live tonight at 9/8c on Talk That Rocks, found only at www.talkthatrocks.com. See you on the show!!

CD Release of the Week #55
Oh man. Look what time it is…..(waiting for you to look)….O-M-G!! It’s Talk That Rocks CD Release of the Week time!!!!!!!
Since we weren’t on the air last week, I have a super special treat for all of you. This week’s CD Release of the Week features 2 albums! Can you believe it? I know you’re all excited to hear what made the cut this week so let’s just get on with it.
We’ll start out the album I Told You I Was Freaky from Flight of the Conchords. If you haven’t heard of Flight of the Conchords then it’s quite possible that you don’t subscribe to the premium movie channel HBO. The Conchords just recently finished the 2nd season of their TV show of the same name which airs on HBO. The show is a bit of a musical comedy that follows their lives as they struggle to make it as a band. It’s quite hilarious and the music is great (as you’ll hear), so I recommended checking the show out on DVD (both seasons are currently in stores). Also they were recently nominated for an Emmy for Outstanding Original Music and Lyrics for the song “Carol Brown” which you’ll here tonight. Sadly they didn’t win, but that’s not the point…the song is great…and I hope you like it.
The 2nd release this week is the Original Motion Picture Soundtrack for New Moon. Now before all you Twilight haters out there flip shit about Talk That Rocks featuring the New Moon soundtrack, let me tell you that I understand. It’s ok to totally hate the films, I have no problem with that, BUT, you can’t deny that the music collected on this soundtrack is good. The soundtrack features previously unreleased tracks from great bands well-known like Death Cab for Cutie, Muse, and The Killers, and throws in quite a few upcoming indie bands like Grizzly Bear, Bon Iver, Anya Marina, and Band of Skulls. Alexandra Patsavas and the crew at the Chop Shop have put together a truly great soundtrack in a time when great soundtracks are few and far between, and for that reason alone I’m excited about it.
So tune in tonight to Talk That Rocks LIVE at 9/8c on www.talkthatrocks.com as we play through songs from this week’s Dual Release CD Release of the Week. See you on the show!!!
Check out the video for Death Cab for Cutie’s “Meet Me On The Equinox” from the New Moon Soundtrack, and the video for Flight of the Conchords’ “Carol Brown” after the jump. Read more
Local Catch: Pet Lions
Man this new Local Catch segment is really “catching” on! Wink Wink….do you get it? Of course you do.
Well it’s only the 2nd week of the Local Catch segment on Talk That Rocks and we’ve already reeled in another great one. This week we’ll be spinning the song “Roman History” from the Chicago band Pet Lions.
Pet Lions are an indie pop rock band from Chicago formed by guitarist/vocalist Karl Østby and bassist Shuhei Yamamoto. Pet Lions’ lineup was completed with the addition of Tom Owens on guitar/keys and Matt Dahl on drums. The band has been playing live since July of 2008. Pet Lions debut EP Soft Right (recorded with Brian Zieske at Gallery of Carpet) was released earlier this year and can be found on iTunes and Amazon RIGHT NOW!
The song we’re playing tonight reminds me a little of Weezer but I wouldn’t say that it completely defines the band’s sound. The rest of the EP broadens them out a bit and is definitely worth checking out. The band has recently played live at Schubas, and has received rave reviews from Metromix Chicago, Indie Rock Cafe, and WXRT.
So tune in to Talk That Rocks live tonight at 9/8c as we play “Roman History” from Pet Lions, our Local Catch of the week.
