Local Catch: Breakers Broken
Tonight marks the start of a brand new segment on Talk That Rocks. You’ve heard of the Catch of the Day at your local restaurant, well Local Catch is a segment where the hosts of Talk That Rocks give you the local music “Catch of the Week” that is coming your way thanks to the great artists and bands being featured in venues around Chicago.
To kick things off this week’s Catch is a Chicago band by the name of Breakers Broken. The trio is made up of Chicago natives Tim Yamaya, Herf Yamaya, and Neal Wehman. Together they spent the summer in the studio recording brand new songs for their EP Reset with well-known Chicago producers Rick Barnes and Doug McBride. New listeners will most likely liken the band’s sound to that of MuteMath, but be sure to check out one of their live shows to see the ensemble expand beyond the trio heard on the EP. Read more
CD Release of the Week #53
Ladies and Gentlemen….Welcome to the CD Release of the Week….#53. How exciting!
This week we’re taking a listen to I and Love and You from The Avett Brothers. The Avett Brothers have been around quite awhile, in fact if Wikipedia is to be believed, I and Love and You constitutes the band’s tenth release. With this being true I’m sure that most of you haven’t even heard of The Avett Brothers. I myself hadn’t heard of them until earlier this year, but I’m glad a friend of mine introduced me to them because I was missing out. Their songs have such a great lyrical quality to them (the album’s title makes for a great lyric in the title track). Even if the melodies are simple, each song has something to say.
So listen up!! and miss out on The Avett Brothers no longer as we play through the top three picks off of I and Love and You tonight on Talk That Rocks. Catch the stream live at 9/8c on www.talkthatrocks.com
Check out the video for the title track off of I and Love and You after the jump. Read more
CD Release of the Week #52
Has it already been a week? Man time is going faster and faster these days. Looks like it’s time for another CD Release of the Week.
This week we’re taking a listen to the self-titled debut album from indie-rock supergroup Monsters of Folk. “Supergroup huh?! I’m calling BS on that one,” is what I’m assuming some of you are saying right about now, but sadly you would be wrong. The group consists of Conor Oberst and Mike Mogis (both of Bright Eyes fame), M.Ward (who works solo and is one half of the group She & Him), and Yim Yames (better known as Jim James from My Morning Jacket). I don’t know about you, but this group seems pretty super. Their debut album is full of the intimate, sweet sounds you would except from any of these artists on their own, but together they have each brought their own flavor to these songs. Don’t be afraid of the word ‘folk’ showing up in the group’s name because the album’s fifteen tracks expand beyond that defining term.
So tune in live tonight at 9/8c to Talk That Rocks as we play through my top three picks from the self-titled debut of Monsters of Folk, only on www.talkthatrocks.com

CD Release of the Week #51
Hey there everybody?! Did you miss us?….well?……did you? Who am I kidding, of course you did!! Well don’t fret because WE’RE BACK! And what better way to celebrate our being backness than with a brand new CD Release of the Week!!
The week we’ll be taking a listen to The Resistance a brand new CD from UK rockers Muse. I have one word to describe this CD…..EPIC. How else would you describe a CD that is full of classical flourishes, Queen recalling melodies, and ends with a full blown, three movement symphony. Epic…that’s what I’d call it, or maybe awesome…take your pick. The Resistance is Muse’s fifth studio album and they have seriously ramped everything up to the highest height. This is definitely a must get for Muse fans out there and will probably help to convert quite a few new fans. Read more
