Are you ready to rock!?!?! and prehaps roll a bit?! Well if you are then you’re ready for this week’s CD Release of the Week.

This week we’re taking a listen to the debut self-titled album from Them Crooked Vultures. Them Crooked Vultures has the honor of joining the list of rock super-groups as the band is comprised of Dave Grohl (Foo Fighters), Josh Homme (Queens of the Stone Age), none other than John Paul Jones (Led Zeppelin).

I’m sure after seeing those names you are creating some high expectations in your mind for this band. Well I’m happy to say that Them Crooked Vultures delivers on those expectations. What the band has laid down on their debut album is Queens of the Stone Age infused with some classic Led Zeppelin and Dave Grohl’s signature drumming.

I’ve pretty much spent all week rockin’ out to this album and so I hope you’ll enjoy my top three picks off the debut album from Them Crooked Vultures as we feature them on tonight’s live episode of Talk That Rocks at 9/8c only on www.talkthatrocks.com

Has it really been a whole week? By golly!! It sure has….and you know what that means!??! It’s time for another brand new edition of the CD Release of the Week!!

This week was a little disappointing for me. None of the major label bands delivered anything good, and the indie bands I were diggin’ on were either a little too weird or a little too sleepy for the 8-10 o’clock hour. So I had to travel back in time….that’s right you heard me correctly…BACK IN TIME!!! All the way back to Oct. 27th where a release by the band The Asteroid Galaxy Tour was sadly overlooked due to Halloween festivities on Talk That Rocks.

So this week we’re featuring the album Fruit by The Asteroid Galaxy Tour. Their music is fun and upbeat and was most recently heard in a commercial for the iPod Touch. So if you’ve been wondering what the heck that one song was…we may have just found it for you. It’s music to make you hopefully forget a bit about the horrible November-on-its-way-to-winter weather outside.

So tune in tonight to Talk That Rocks live at 9/8c where we’ll play through my three favorite songs from The Asteroid Galaxy Tour’s Fruit only on www.talkthatrocks.com

Check out the video for the song “The Golden Age” off of The Asteroid Galaxy Tour’s Fruit after the jump.

“Go pollute yourself and the air.”

This saying referring to someone smoking cigarettes is where Chicago band Yourself & The Air take their name from, but instead of going any further with the cigarette comparisons Yourself & The Air describes THEMselves as an ever-changing musical outfit of emotion, ambition, and will.

The group started in 2006 as 5 friends who came together with barely any prior musical experience with a desire to make music and feel better. I feel that Erick Crosby (guitar, vocals), Drew Rassmussen (drums), Jeff Pappendorf (keys)m and brothers Nicholas David (Guitar) and James David (bass) have at least reached some of those expectations as they’ll be playing to what I can only assume will be a pretty large crowd this Thursday at the Metro when they open for nationwide touring band Peter Bjorn and John.

The band’s music has a sound of it’s own which has fans comparing them to the Cure, but I hear more of Phoenix’s Thomas Mars in the tones of the band’s lead singer Erick Crosby. Hear for yourself and make up your own decision when we play a song off of their newest EP Friends of All Breeds tonight live on Talk That Rocks at 9/8c only on www.talkthatrocks.com

Check out the song “So You’ve Come to Mingle” off of Yourself & The Air’s EP Friends of All Breeds including where to find more info on the band after the jump.

This week we’re takin’ a listen to Julian Casablancas’ solo debut Phrazes for the Young. If you think the name Julian Casablancas sounds familiar it’s probably because it does. He’s the lead singer from the band The Strokes. Albert Hammond Jr.’s been making the rounds with his two solo albums and now it’s finally Julian Casablacas’ turn to shine as a solo artist. Phrazes for the Young is full of synth coatings on some quite danceable tracks. “11th Dimension” sits as as a standout from the rest of the tracks, but not by much.

Lucky for you’re we’ll be playing “11th Dimension” along with 2 more great tracks live tonight at 9/8c on Talk That Rocks, found only at www.talkthatrocks.com. See you on the show!!

Check out Julian Casablancas performing “11th Dimension” from Phrazes for the Young live on the Tonight Show with Conan O’Brien after the jump.

Look what time it is…..(waiting for you to look)….O-M-G!! It’s Talk That Rocks CD Release of the Week time!!!!!!!

Since we weren’t on the air last week, I have a super special treat for all of you. This week’s CD Release of the Week features 2 albums! Can you believe it? I know you’re all excited to hear what made the cut this week so let’s just get on with it.

We’ll start out the album I Told You I Was Freaky from Flight of the Conchords. If you haven’t heard of Flight of the Conchords then it’s quite possible that you don’t subscribe to the premium movie channel HBO. The Conchords just recently finished the 2nd season of their TV show of the same name which airs on HBO. The show is a bit of a musical comedy that follows their lives as they struggle to make it as a band. It’s quite hilarious and the music is great (as you’ll hear), so I recommended checking the show out on DVD (both seasons are currently in stores). Also they were recently nominated for an Emmy for Outstanding Original Music and Lyrics for the song “Carol Brown” which you’ll here tonight. Sadly they didn’t win, but that’s not the point…the song is great…and I hope you like it.

The 2nd release this week is the Original Motion Picture Soundtrack for New Moon. Now before all you Twilight haters out there flip shit about Talk That Rocks featuring the New Moon soundtrack, let me tell you that I understand. It’s ok to totally hate the films, I have no problem with that, BUT, you can’t deny that the music collected on this soundtrack is good. The soundtrack features previously unreleased tracks from great bands well-known like Death Cab for Cutie, Muse, and The Killers, and throws in quite a few upcoming indie bands like Grizzly Bear, Bon Iver, Anya Marina, and Band of Skulls. Alexandra Patsavas and the crew at the Chop Shop have put together a truly great soundtrack in a time when great soundtracks are few and far between, and for that reason alone I’m excited about it.

Wink Wink….do you get it? Of course you do.

Well it’s only the 2nd week of the Local Catch segment on Talk That Rocks and we’ve already reeled in another great one. This week we’ll be spinning the song “Roman History” from the Chicago band Pet Lions.

Pet Lions are an indie pop rock band from Chicago formed by guitarist/vocalist Karl Østby and bassist Shuhei Yamamoto. Pet Lions’ lineup was completed with the addition of Tom Owens on guitar/keys and Matt Dahl on drums. The band has been playing live since July of 2008. Pet Lions debut EP Soft Right (recorded with Brian Zieske at Gallery of Carpet) was released earlier this year and can be found on iTunes and Amazon RIGHT NOW!

The song we’re playing tonight reminds me a little of Weezer but I wouldn’t say that it completely defines the band’s sound. The rest of the EP broadens them out a bit and is definitely worth checking out. The band has recently played live at Schubas, and has received rave reviews from Metromix Chicago, Indie Rock Cafe, and WXRT.

So tune in to Talk That Rocks live tonight at 9/8c as we play “Roman History” from Pet Lions, our Local Catch of the week.

Make the jump to find out more information about Pet Lions, and to learn how to get their debut EP Soft Right for free!

This week we’re taking a listen to the self-titled debut album by the group Dead Man’s Bones. The group is made up of none other than Oscar nominated actor Ryan Gosling and his best friend Zach Shields. Apparently they got together based on an obsession with the Haunted Mansion ride at Disneyland. Once they became friends they decided to write some songs together based around a monster/ghost love story they had come up with. It was interesting to read that while in the studio the band wanted to play every instrument themselves, even if they’d never played it before, and do no more than three takes for each song so that they did not end up sounding too sophisticated or overly produced. This lends them a very earthy sound that I quite enjoy. Their music does sound pure and un-tweaked to the fullest by engineers in the studio. The whole album also features the voices of the Silverlake Conservatory of Music’s Children’s Choir. This too is a nice touch as it often adds to some of the eeriness I’m sure they were looking to portray.

So tune in to Talk That Rocks live tonight at 9/8c as we play through the top 3 picks from Dead Man’s Bones self-titled debut album. See you on the show!

Check out a live video of Dead Man’s Bones and the Silverlake Conservatory of Music Children’s Choir performing the song “In The Room Where You Sleep” after the jump.

You’ve heard of the Catch of the Day at your local restaurant, well Local Catch is a segment where the hosts of Talk That Rocks give you the local music “Catch of the Week” that is coming your way thanks to the great artists and bands being featured in venues around Chicago.

To kick things off this week’s Catch is a Chicago band by the name of Breakers Broken. The trio is made up of Chicago natives Tim Yamaya, Herf Yamaya, and Neal Wehman. Together they spent the summer in the studio recording brand new songs for their EP Reset with well-known Chicago producers Rick Barnes and Doug McBride. New listeners will most likely liken the band’s sound to that of MuteMath, but be sure to check out one of their live shows to see the ensemble expand beyond the trio heard on the EP.

In fact, you can check the band out soon as they are playing The Bottom Lounge (1375 W. Lake St) on Friday Oct. 9th @ Bottom Lounge. Tickets can be purchased at www.bottomlounge.com

Their music has also been featured on the Local101 show on the Chicago FM station Q101. We’re happy to feature their song “Last Man on the Planet” tonight live at 9/8c on www.talkthatrocks.com

For more information on Breakers Broken check out their Myspace page at www.myspace.com/breakersbroken or their official website at www.breakersbroken.com

How exciting!

This week we’re taking a listen to I and Love and You from The Avett Brothers. The Avett Brothers have been around quite awhile, in fact if Wikipedia is to be believed, I and Love and You constitutes the band’s tenth release. With this being true I’m sure that most of you haven’t even heard of The Avett Brothers. I myself hadn’t heard of them until earlier this year, but I’m glad a friend of mine introduced me to them because I was missing out. Their songs have such a great lyrical quality to them (the album’s title makes for a great lyric in the title track). Even if the melodies are simple, each song has something to say.

So listen up!! and miss out on The Avett Brothers no longer as we play through the top three picks off of I and Love and You tonight on Talk That Rocks. Catch the stream live at 9/8c on www.talkthatrocks.com

Check out the video for the title track off of I and Love and You after the jump.
